What is mp3 ?

Mp3 sound files are generally used when placing audio on the internet as they allow a small file size whilst retaining a high quality.

What is streaming ?

The mp3 audio files featured on this site are streamed. This means they start playing as they download, so you are hearing the start of the file whilst the middle and end of it are still downloading - you don't have to wait for the whole file to download before listening to it. This means quicker access to the audio.

ARTISTS - please note that when you create your mp3 files, you should ensure they are created at a bit rate of 32 Kbps or less. This will ensure that users on 56K dial-up modems can access them as well as those using broadband, isdn or cable.

I'm having problems listening to the audio files on the site - what should I do ?

1. It just doesn't play: Some users may find that they need to open their mp3 player before they click the link to play the audio.

2. It stutters: If you are using an internet connection which is slower than the bit rate at which the audio was created then this will occur. We do tell all artists to create their mp3 at 32 Kbps, and most do. However it is possible that some of them feel they want the quality to be higher, meaning that anyone on a dial-up modem or other slower connection will have trouble hearing the audio properly.

32 Kbps audio will stream fine to a 56K modem. Any higher rates and you will need to be on an isdn, cable, adsl broadband or similar connection to hear it.

Why do I keep getting logged out of the 'My Voicetape' area ?

This is happening because you do not have session cookies enabled in your browser. Use the following guide to enable the cookies.

For Internet Explorer users:

Go to Tools > Internet Options > Security and then Click the Custom Level button. You should then be presented with a long list of security features, most of which have three options: enable, disable or prompt. Scroll down the list until you reach the 'Cookies' section. Set 'Allow per-session cookies (not stored)' to Enable. You should now be able to log in and use the 'edit my details' and 'upload my sound clips' pages without any problems. Please contact us for further information.

For Netscape users:

Go to Tasks > Privacy & Security > Cookie Manager > Unblock Cookies From This Site. This should solve the problem. Please contact us for further information.

I tried adding a specific page on the site to 'My Favourites' and I get taken back to the home page every time I try to access the page from my Favourites list. Why is this ?

You cannot access some parts of the Voicetape site unless you go via the front page. This is a security feature to ensure that registered artists have to log in every time they wish to access their personal details or upload a sound clip.
